Newbury Place Health Centre, Salford, Manchester
In July 2016 a new £6 million health centre in Salford opened its doors. Built by Level Healthcare, Newbury Place Health Centre, Salford, brings together three GP practices - Newbury Green Medical Practice, Limefield Medical Practice and Dr Davis’s Medical Practice - along with community health services, a pharmacy and opticians.
Construction started in September 2014, by January 2016 the project was at a point where clinical fitted furniture could be discussed with the construction team. Sunflower Medical Ltd was invited to present our range of medical furniture and show the different types of clinical finishes we could achieve for a cost effective price. Sunflower presented to Level Healthcare and to the doctor’s representatives. CAD (computer aided design) plans and visuals were produced and sample material finishes were presented. A quote was developed that allowed flexibility during the delivery phase and aligned to the building program.
After a visit to the Sunflower factory in Bradford the building owners decided that Sunflower were the best people to deliver the project. In particular they liked that we fully understood the requirement of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and that our clinical room designs were in line with the required HTM’s and HBN’s (Healthcare Building Notes). They were also impressed that we were the manufacturer of the Medical Base and Wall Units, not just a middleman offering kitchen units. The price was also in-line with their budget offering quality at a competitive price.
The scope of the work for Sunflower was to design, manufacture and fit healthcare furniture for 34 clinical consultation rooms and treatment rooms alongside 3 dirty utility rooms. The furniture specified by Sunflower was a range of HTM63 interpretation project cabinets featuring gloss white finishes for infection control performance. All wall cabinets were of a sloping top design to prevent the build up of dirt on the top surface and aid cleaning.
All the worktops were Sunflowers’ own “Medtop” solid surface, which comes complete with an integrated curved upstand taking the interface between wall and worktop away from the working surface. All the sealants used were anti-bacterial to prevent mold growth. Some rooms were fitted with Sunflowers’ own range of Controlled Drug Cabinets which are independently tested by FIRA for security and meet BS2881:1989. Our experience and knowledge of the requirements of a healthcare facility new build meant that when the rooms were inspected by CQC they passed without comment.
Sunflower has its own fitting team, who are used to working in an active construction site. Risk assessments and method statements were produced before work began to ensure that our work did not cause danger. The project was actively managed by an experienced Sunflower project manager.
From the beginning Sunflower made a point of keeping the doctors informed of our range of standard non fitted healthcare furniture. When the rooms needed loose medical furniture such as doctors Treatment Couches, Medical Storage Trolleys (Vista trolleys) and Stainless Steel Dressing Trolleys they knew that the Sunflower Medical Furniture range would be ideal and prove to be cost effective.
Sunflowers’ aspect of this project was completed in 10 weeks, on time and in full. Level Healthcare were delighted with the work and were generous enough to offer themselves as a reference site for Sunflower.
