Guys and St Thomas’ New Cancer Centre

In October 2016 Sunflower Medical won a tender to supply clinical furniture to the new Guys and St Thomas’ Cancer Centre in London. The 14 storey £160 million pound building offering cancer care, is a state of the art facility and required an extensive range of quality medical furniture to compliment the design.

Sunflower attended various show and tell functions with clinical staff and presented a range of different furniture solutions including Treatment Couches, Phlebotomy Couches, Medical Stools and Chairs, Vista Clinical Storage Trolleys, Dressing Trolleys and Clinical Waste Bins. As a result we were voted the best solution by the clinical and project team, seeing off hard competition from some established competitors. We worked closely with NHS Supply Chain and Guys & St Thomas’ procurement teams to ensure the furniture offered provided good value.

As a manufacturer we have greater flexibility and adaptations were made to the standard items to accommodate specific needs from Guys staff. These included none standard vinyl colours, different drawer configurations on trolleys and our ability to supply a small quantity of factored in items. Lead times were incredibly tight but with our extensive experience and “can do” attitude within the whole company we stepped up to the challenge and manufactured, installed and delivered on time.

A key factor for the project was our ability to deliver and position the medical furniture on time in what quickly became a working unit. Sunflower offered a full turn-key solution and we put a team of senior people on the ground at the new Cancer Centre to co-ordinate equipping. In the space of 5 days hundreds of pieces of hospital furniture were positioned in separate rooms over the 14 floors of the building. Each couch was tested and commissioned. Our fleet of small trucks proved to be ideal within the London traffic and could get close to the building with no issues. All items were delivered on time to the satisfaction of the Project Managers at Guys.

At the end of the project it was expressed by the Commissioning Manager Kate Bradley and Guys and St Thomas’ Portfolio Manager Andrew Fowler that Sunflower Medical had performed admirably under difficult circumstances and given the chance they would use Sunflower again.
